Peace

I am tired out from a lot hours behind my camera today in very cold temps - it was a very peaceful and beautiful time on the river. I decided to do something totally different this year so I am in Kennebunk, ME for a few days this week. These photos are from my entire day on the banks of the Kennebunk River - not far from where it dumps into the Atlantic. The river is fascinating as the tides are constantly changing… about 4 foot differences today between the high and low tides. Lots of birds take advantage of the bounty in this ever changing river. Today started totally cloudy, then 3 hours of beautiful dry fluffy snow, and then late in the day the sun came out.

Before I forget… I was asked where Horton the Screech lives… his hole is in a tree in front of 47 South Main Street in Sunderland. You never know when you might see him sitting in his hole - good luck…

I hope these images give you an idea of just how peaceful these moments were today.

White-winged Scoter (first time I have seen one on a river…)

A beautiful Long-Tailed Duck

Just before the snow started the sky turned red for a very brief moment… and so did the river…

And then the snow started falling … Common Eider

Of all days… I honestly couldn’t believe it… this gorgeous loon flew in when the snow was coming down at its hardest. At first I thought it was a Red-throated loon but I can now clearly see the partial neck band so this is a Common Loon in winter plumage… just so beautiful…

Common Eider

Another Common Loon flew in… incredible…For the next few hours I kept seeing these two loons off and on…

And 3 hours later the sun was out and the lighting was incredible… this Eider was very hungry….

Mallard

And a beautiful Common Goldeneye came floating by…

And another Eider snagged another crab… The two Eiders kept to the middle of the river as the tide was beginning to go out and they kept scoring…

Another Common Goldeneye flew in…

And then clouds came in for a few moments as the sun was setting and the river turned pink…

The clouds parted just as the sun was setting behind the trees behind me and this gorgeous loon floated by me one last time…

Wishing us all peace…
